it rained really hard in columbia this afternoon, so hard that it blew a baby squirrel out of its nest! my mom and i were sitting in my car after going to the hotel to discuss issues with the contract, waiting for the rain to let up. finally we said screw it, and got out of the car. i was running across the street and heard this pathetic squeaking, so i looked, and there was a baby squirrel in the middle of the road! i picked it up and carried it inside. i heard another one, but i think it was in a tree still, and i couldn't find it. so anyway, my mom found a shoebox to put the baby in, and athey put a heating pad in with it, and then i went out to look for the other baby, but it wasn't squeaking anymore. so either it drowned or its mom got it...so in the same vein as[livejournal.com profile] eilonwy's raccoon, we're going to say the mommy squirrel found the other baby.
also, a bird blew onto the back porch, so after taking care of the squirrel, i put on some gardening gloves and caught the bird and put it outside. it had been frantically beating against the screen, trying to get out. it hopped around a bit and then hid in the ivy.
my mom and athey went to the wildlife place and dropped off the baby squirrel. they were very appreciative, and athey filled out a card so they'll let us know when it gets released into the wild or dies. i don't really want to know if it dies. i was surprised it didn't die from falling out of the tree, but it seemed to be okay. it was sleeping a lot, but it moved around quite a bit, and even sat up, according to athey. she took pictures, which i may eventually post.
anyway, i drove home after checking the weather, since everyone said it was going to be too stormy for me to drive home. there was one bad patch, but it was short, and now i'm home!
oh, and i saw a deer on the way home too, so it's been a very wildlife day. when i was little i wanted to be a zoologist.

The above link will get you to the site that has the audio for the story. They are going to introduce a mascot to sell homeland security to children. Right now they're looking for a name, but I didn't even know what kind of animal it was going to be before I listened to the story (someone at work was talking about it). My first choice for a mascot? A rabbit came to mind. In the news story, they talk to a mascot group guy, and rabbit was his first suggestion. My next idea was a sheepdog. And, it turns out, they are going to use an American Shepherd as the mascot. (really the american shepherd is not a recognized breed). Anyway, I guess I'm on the same wavelength as mascot guys and children between the ages of 8 and 12--they asked kids what the mascot should be, and sheepdog/shepherd was the most popular reply.

i woke up much too early. i'm going to go to target and the grocery store and the post office to mail the "rent check" as dave insists on calling our mortgage.
last night i dreamed i told dave he was responsible for purchasing my wedding ring, and he said i wasn't going to get one then because he couldn't afford it. thinking about it now, i realized it was just a dream. much more easily dismissable than the one where i dreamed he was having sex with a prostitute, WHILE i was in the bed as well. i was mad at him all day for that one. then he had a bad day at work, so i told him that was what he got for screwing a prostitute in my presence.
